Whether it’s running Windows 10 or Windows 8, learn how to reset your PC with this tutorial.

The procedure for restoring a Windows PC, laptop, or tablet varies slightly depending on the version of the operating system you are using. Thus, we divided this tutorial into two parts: the first presents the reset process for Windows 10, the second for Windows 7 and 8.

Restore your Windows 10 to factory settings

Windows 10 has a program to restore the computer to the factory settings, which makes the process rather simple.

First, open the Start Menu and go to your Settings by clicking on the gear symbol.

In the search bar, tap Reset and click on the “Reset this PC” option.

Now that you are in the Recovery section, click Start to start the restore. You can then choose to keep some files on your computer or delete everything.

Restore your Windows 7 or 8 to factory settings

Restoring computers with Windows 7 or 8 is a bit more complex.

Except for some Windows 8, these older operating systems do not have an easy-to-access tool to reset the computer. Just take a look in your applications to see if you do not have a program named Restore Manager (or a variation of that name).

If you do not find an application of this name, your computer may have been provided with a recovery CD-ROM. In this case, you are lucky. Just insert the disc into your PC and follow the information on the screen. Be careful, do not forget to save your important files on an external hard drive or on a Cloud before starting the restoration.

Finally, if you do not have a disk or program to reboot your computer, there is a good chance your computer has a recovery partition.

A recovery partition is a small hidden part of the hard drive that keeps a copy of Windows and its programs. It can be used to reset the computer and refurbish it.

Note: The reset process varies slightly depending on the brand or model of your computer, as does the name of the recovery software.

Restoring your computer to the factory settings deletes all the files on it.

So, before starting the process, save the documents you want to keep on an external hard drive or on a cloud (photos, music).

    Second step

Turn on or restart your computer.

    Third step

While your computer is being turned on, press the F key. Note that this shortcut varies by manufacturer, so we have a list for you below.

Also, to start the reset command, do not hesitate to press the key several times while your computer is on.

    Shortcut by computer brands:

    ·         Acer – Alt + F10

    ·         Asus – F9

    ·         Dell / Alienware – F8

    ·         HP – F11

    ·         Lenovo – F11

    ·         MSI – F3

    ·         Samsung – F4

    ·         Sony – F10

Toshiba – press 0 (the key above the letter o – not the one on the numeric keypad) until the Toshiba Logo appears.

If no shortcuts work for you, read the message that appears when you turn on your computer. It is possible that it indicates which key to press to start the reset.

Finally, some computers may not have a recovery partition. If this is your case, you will need to contact the manufacturer of your computer.

    Fourth step

Now you should see instructions on your screen. Since each computer has its own restoration software, we cannot give you a detailed guide for this last part.

However, the process is almost always automatic, and you probably only have to confirm the reset of your computer with a click.

After starting the process, leave your computer alone until a message indicates that the restore is complete.
